Feed types

Drop feed – Drop feed is the most commonly used feed system and is used in most domestic sewing machines and most straight stitch high speed industrial lockstitch sewing machines. In a drop feed machine the feed dogs are mounted in the bed of the machine under the presser foot. The feed dogs are attached to a mechanism that moves them in an oval cyclical motion as follows: 1. up to contact the fabric (the teeth of the feed dog dig into the fabric) 2. towards the back of the machine to move the fabric one stitch length. 3. Down to drop out of contact with the fabric (hence the reason for the name “drop feed”). 4. forward while in the down position so that they are in position to start the cycle again. The feed dogs always move the fabric when the needle is in the up position. Newer models move the feed dogs in a rectangular motion instead of an oval motion, this is called "box feed".

Walking foot – In a walking foot machine the presser is driven by the machine and foot moves with the feed dogs. When sewing multiple layers this will help to keep the top layers moving at the same rate as the bottom layers and prevents the top layers from sticking to the presser foot. The presser foot in these machines looks different than the presser foot in a drop feed machine and can have teeth like a feed dog. Some walking foot machines have a second smaller presser foot that holds the fabric stationary while the feed dogs and main presser foot recycle (move while out of contact with the fabric to get ready for the next stitch).

Needle feed – In most needle feed machines the needle moves with the feed dogs while the needle is in the down position. Because the fabric is moving with the needle in the down position and through the fabric, multiple layers of fabric will all move at the same time with no creeping.

Compound feed – This feed type is needle feed with a walking foot. Compound feed is used in some heavy-duty machines used in sail making and other applications that use multiple layers of thick slippery material to prevent the layers from moving around.

Puller feed and tractor feed – Puller feed and tractor feed mechanisms are auxiliary feed mechanisms that mount behind the needle and presser foot to help pull the material through the machine. They are used when sewing large items such as carpet, tents and sails. Puller feed uses a tire of rollers driven by a drive shaft or belt that is powered by the machine of by a separate motor. Tractor feed is similar except it uses a tracked belt instead of a tire or roller to pull the material.
